In early 1900s, airlines hired male “stewards”, whose main jobs were to help passengers with their luggage, reassure nervous flyers, and ensure passengers comfort during flights. It was not until the 1930s that the female flight attendants appeared, beginning with Ellen Church in 1930, a trained nurse who convinced Boeing Air Transport, that women could better calm passengers and assist them with medical needs. Her success changed the future of the industry, and soon, airlines around the world started hiring women, and reshaped the current image of flight attendants, to what it is today.

It sits at some 10 meters (33 feet), below surface water of the Susami Bay, a small coastal town in Wakayama Prefecture, of Japan. Installed in 1999 as part of a campaign to promote local tourism, this deep-sea postbox receives thousands of waterproof letters every year. Divers write messages on special water-resistant postcards, seal them in oil-based markers, and drop them into the box, where they are later collected by local postal workers. It is one of Japan’s most unusual tourists attraction and holds the Guinness World Record for the deepest underwater postbox.
