This occured after being persuaded by their cult leader and preacher, Jim Jones [ 1931 to 1978], to drink cyanide-laced punch in order to make heaven. This included the assassination of a congressman, Loe Ryan. It marked one of the largest single losses of American civilian life outside of war, and left a lasting and defining impact on public awareness of cults and psychological manipulation of people's minds, by cult leaders with well packaged propaganda.
